 2 storey |  275,000sf | $50M | Scottsdale | 2008

The redevelopment of the Chaparral High School campus for Scottsdale Unified School District had the unique challenge of building around and maintaining parts of the existing 40-year old campus.  School had to remain in session while construction occurred over three years.  The goal was to come up with a contextual design, that reinforced student life on campus and did not feel as dated as some of the existing buildings which were to remain, Through extensive user and community meetings, a strong sentiment of the existing community and campus culture was uncovered.  The new concept of the replacement design provide for a campus layout that celebrated and strengthened the existing Chaparral heritage and culture, while utilizing the existing palette of materials in new ways to freshen up the campus, and tie it all together.  The design concept, inspired by the river flowing through a canyon, informed the creation of a vibrant campus life with an exterior student mall strengthened by the canyon walls of the buildings. Project completed while at Orcutt | Winslow.
